Why Stay in a Boutique Studio in Central Lisbon Instead of a Hotel
Self check-in, full kitchen, real neighbourhood and 50 % more space for less money. Five reasons a boutique studio beats a downtown hotel for two nights or more in Lisbon, and one reason it does not.
Lisbon's hotel scene has grown faster than the city. Walk down Avenida da Liberdade and you'll count a new opening every six months. Slick lobbies, identical breakfast buffets, identical complaints in the TripAdvisor reviews. Meanwhile, hidden one street back in Baixa-Chiado, boutique studios in century-old Pombaline buildings are quietly out-performing those hotels on every metric guests actually care about.
We host travellers every week at Lisbon Studios, in an 18th-century Pombaline building 300 m from Praça do Comércio. Most of our guests booked a hotel first and switched after their second visit. Here is why.

1. Space, and the price you pay per square metre
A standard four-star hotel room in central Lisbon is 18 to 22 square metres. Our smallest studio is 19 m². Our largest is 50 m². The median Lisbon Studios stay is 35 m², between 60 % and 100 % more living space than the equivalent hotel room, at the same nightly rate or less.
Space changes how a trip feels. A 35 m² studio fits a king-size bed, a private jacuzzi or freestanding bathtub, a kitchenette with a real table, a sofa, and a window seat with a view of the Sé Cathedral. A hotel room of the same price holds a bed, a desk, a kettle, and the regret of choosing this hotel.
2. Self check-in, 24/7, on your schedule
Lisbon's airport is busy and unpredictable. A 22:30 arrival from London becomes a 01:00 arrival at the apartment after immigration, taxi, and traffic on the IC2. At every hotel we've ever stayed at, this means a sleepy receptionist, a printed registration form, and 15 minutes of paperwork before bed.
Self check-in means none of that. We send the door code by WhatsApp 24 hours before arrival. You walk in at any hour, drop your bags, and you're asleep ten minutes later. The reverse is also true: leave at 04:30 for an early flight without having to wake anyone or arrange a "skip the desk" procedure. The system just works.
3. A kitchen, even if you don't cook
You don't need to be a chef. You need:
- A kettle for the first coffee at 7 a.m. before any café in Lisbon opens.
- A fridge that holds the cheese, ham and bread you bought at Mercado da Ribeira yesterday for an improvised dinner.
- An induction hob that lets you boil pasta for the kid who refuses to eat anything else.
- A washing machine. For stays of three nights or more, this is a quiet superpower.
Hotels almost always lack all four. Our studios have all four, and the difference for a three-night stay is roughly €60 in saved restaurant breakfasts and €40 in saved bottled water.
4. A real neighbourhood, not a hotel district
Avenida da Liberdade is wide, beautiful, and lined with luxury hotels. It is also empty after 22:00, expensive at every café, and a 20-minute walk from anything you actually want to see.
Baixa-Chiado is different. Step out of the building and you're four minutes from Praça do Comércio, two minutes from the closest bica counter (€0.80, no terrace markup), and surrounded by neighbours who have lived here for forty years. The bakery downstairs opens at 06:30. The hardware shop next door still sells brass keys. The fado bar three doors down does not advertise on Booking. This is where Lisbon happens, not where it is sold to tourists.
5. WhatsApp instead of "press 0 for reception"
When the heating panel won't switch on in a hotel, you call reception, hold for four minutes, explain the problem to someone who has been on shift for nine hours, and wait for a technician who arrives an hour later.
When the same happens at Lisbon Studios, you message us on WhatsApp. We reply within five minutes, almost always with a fix. If it's something physical that needs a visit, we walk over, we live in the same neighbourhood. The whole interaction takes ten minutes and never feels like a transaction.
A quick cost example: couple, 4 nights, mid-season
Let's do the maths on a normal trip for two in May. A central four-star hotel in Lisbon runs about €180 a night, so €720 for the four nights. Add €88 for breakfast (around €11 per head per day, and that's on the cheaper side), the €16 you'll spend on coffees outside the hotel anyway, plus €24 for the bottled water that keeps mysteriously disappearing from your room. That brings you to €848 all in.
The same four nights at Lisbon Studios are €130 a night, so €520. Breakfast doesn't appear on the list because there's a kitchen, and the same goes for coffee (espresso machine on the counter) and water (the kitchen tap is filtered). Total: €524.
Same week, €324 in your pocket, more space, no buffet at 7 a.m. where you're trying to convince yourself the ham is worth a plate.
When a hotel still wins
To be fair: a hotel is still the right call if you're in Lisbon for a single night between flights, want a gym and a pool, prefer not to think about anything except "press 0 for reception", or you're travelling on company expenses where receipts must say "hotel".
For everything else (long weekends, anniversaries, work trips with a partner, family stays, slow city breaks) a boutique studio wins on space, on price, and on how the trip feels when you look back.
Where to book
We're biased: Lisbon Studios is what we run. Eight studios and suites from 19 to 50 m², all in a single Pombaline building in Baixa-Chiado, including the Romantic Studio with Jacuzzi for a couple's escape and the bright Beautiful Suite with two balconies for a city break with a view. All bookable directly without booking fees and with free cancellation up to seven days before arrival.
If you've been considering a hotel for your next Lisbon trip, look at our studios and at the maths in the table above. Then book whichever makes more sense. We're a WhatsApp message away either way.
